My grandfather taught me to shoot before I could do much else. He stormed the beach at Normandy and carried pieces of that day for the rest of his life. When I was seven I put a BB through a piece of scrap metal on our shed and it came back and caught me.
He stopped me right there. You have to be careful of the ricochet. A gun is dangerous because you do not get to take back what leaves the barrel. If you are hunting, that is an animal that does not get up again. If it is an accident, that is a person. Whatever leaves the barrel, the outcome comes back to you one way or another.
The same rule runs a business
Every bit of energy you put out, into your team, your clients, your work, comes back to you. Put out nothing and you have to be at peace with getting nothing back. Put out real effort and real intensity and what ricochets back is real too. It just returns moving in a direction you did not fully control.
That is the whole company in one word, and it is why I named it Ricochet.
Where most owners get this wrong
They expect a return they never sent out. They want a team that takes ownership while they hold every decision. They want customers who trust them while their process makes people chase answers. The rebound is honest even when we are not. It gives back exactly what was put in.
The fix is never a motivational one. It is structural. Decide deliberately what you are sending out, build the system that sends it every time without you standing over it, then let the rebound do its work.
